Uplifting Men and Youth in Africa, commonly known as UMaY (pronounced You-May), is an international non-government organisation (NGO), which was formally registered in Kenya in December 2009.
We have developed a structure, which we believe is unique in Kenya, whereby a mixture of professionals share the governance and decision-making powers of UMaY with the people who face the challenges we are working to resolve. These people include economists, HIV/AIDS specialists, legal and governance specialists and community representatives from informal settlements such as elders, coordinators of grass-root community based organisations and youth ambassadors.
It is this unique structure that ensures UMaY delivers its promise to our clients to use resources in a responsible, sustainable, accountable and transparent means.
How UMaY Began - The Founders
UMaY was founded by three individuals from very different backgrounds - an Australian Roman-Catholic with a Commerce Degree, a Kenyan Protestant raised in a slum and a privileged Kenyan Muslim.
Together with a Steering Committee of ten carefully selected professional and community representatives, Adam, David and Farhan encourage the vision of UMaY and enforce its mission and objectives.
